HOUSE APPROVES VETERANS PACKAGE

Des Moines, Iowa – The Iowa House of Representatives gave unanimous approval to a trio of bills related to Iowa veterans on Wednesday night.  The proposal include banning protests near military funerals, offering lifetime hunting or fishing licenses to disabled veterans and helping nursing homes identify veterans.

“Iowa veterans deserve our support and respect,” said State Representative Nathan Reichert of Muscatine.   “Families who lose a loved one in combat should not have to face protestors at a memorial service, funeral or burial.”

The bill, House File 2132, prohibits people from protesting within 500 feet of military funerals or memorial services from an hour before the service to an hour after the service has concluded. Offenders would face jail time and fines.

The House also approved House File 2244, which allows disabled veterans to purchase a lifetime combined hunting and fishing license or just a lifetime fishing license for $5.  House File 2363, also approved by the House, will help the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs more easily identify veterans and spouses living in nursing homes.
