sponsors compromise Measure to Help Small Businesses with Health Insurance
Costs
“Small businesses and their employees are in great need of help in obtaining affordable health insurance,” said Reichert. “We have been debating a new and innovative plan with real potential to reduce costs and widen availability to small businesses throughout Iowa, but the legislation is bogged down in a special interest power struggle.”
“Affordable health care is far too important of an issue to be brought down by special interests at the Capitol,” added Reichert. “We need action this year. That’s why I co-sponsored what I consider to be a reasonable compromise. I don’t want to pass a health care plan that pits healthy Iowans against those who have health problems. We need a plan that gives the opportunity for cost savings to every small business employee.”
The bill includes a pilot project to allow small businesses to pool together with larger associations to take advantage of lower insurance rates. The bill also includes wellness incentives and allows businesses to provide health insurance to contract employees.
“After four months of hard work and negotiations, I’m disappointed that this bill has become a political football,” said Reichert. “However, I’m not willing to give up on small businesses. The amendment I sponsored today is a realistic and practical plan that can end the gridlock and offer some hope to small businesses and their employees.”
